Men’s Health

Andropause

How to keep the pause out of andropause.
Andropause or “male menopause” is a medical condition that may be thought of as the counterpart to menopause in women. In both sexes, the condition is caused by a decline in the levels of hormones related to sexuality and occurs over a period of time. Andropause is due to a decrease in testosterone, an androgen, that causes the secondary sex characteristics such as facial hair, deepening of voice, and increase in muscle bulk. In women, the onset of hormone decline may be quite striking with hot flashes and night sweats. in men, however, it can be quite subtle and is often mistaken for normal aging.
Men at midlife and beyond can maintain their sexual fitness, interest, and vitality in spite of the decline in testosterone due to the normal aging process

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is simply the inability among men to develop and maintain an erection. Erectile dysfunction results in unsatisfactory sexual intercourse due to not being able to sustain an erection during intercourse. Some people confuse an occasional inability to maintain an erection as erectile dysfunction. This is an incorrect diagnosis of the problem, since once in a while problems with erections are normal to most men. However an ongoing erection problem needs to be investigated.

Male Obesity

As men age, they have lower testosterone leading to less muscle mass. less muscle mass means easier weight gain due to lower metabolism. Men, unlike women, are much more likely to end up with central obesity – fat around the middle – the very type that is linked to the metabolic syndrome. Many overweight men going on to develop type-2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, some cancers, osteoarthritis and respiratory problems, along with many other more minor problems. It is known that the incidence of obesity is reaching epidemic levels in the western world. According to reports in 2004, 30.6% of the male population in the U.S was obese.

Prostate Health

The prostate is a small organ about found below the bladder; it surrounds the tube carrying urine from the bladder. The prostate gland helps in making a fluid which is converted to become part of semen in the male body. Prostrate problems in men are common, especially for those who have crossed the age group of 50; however it is often not recognized till the problem is more aggravated. A more common prostate problem is enlargement of the prostate called benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH). Less common but more serious is prostate cancer. In men, obesity can cause increased estrogen that leads to man boobs and increased risk of prostate cancer.
